Leotards and sweat bands, that’s right! I started working out as an oh so chubby college student. I was somewhat athletic in high school, but never really made a concerted effort to work out or get in shape. I didn’t have to though because I was young. Once I got into college….that was a different story. Lots of beer and late night papa johns…oh my. And so began my journey to flab and cellulite land. It didn’t help that I stayed in school six years and just kept chugging away.
The turnaround for me was the age old cliche…..a wedding! I was getting married, had to fit into a dress, had to take a gazillion photos that I would have to live with FOR- Ev- Er. And so the fitness adventure began. At the time, I was living in a giant house with about seven extra rooms so I set out to devote one to a work out room. I got a huge mirror for the wall, bought rubber flooring, mounted a TV in the corner, and even got a water cooler. It was awesome. The next task was to figure out what I was going to do in there. So I went to the only logical place a girl can go when she wants to get in shape…the internet. I found a bunch of recommendations for “The Firm”, a series of workout DVDs that were great for at home work outs. I ordered the beginners set and started going to town.
Seriously, who doesn’t want to look like this chic??
And tell me she doesn’t look like she’s having a good time. (It’s all a lie, by the way. They’re actually quite painful.)
Soon, I became addicted. I bought every workout DVD the firm made- abs, arms, butts, guts, legs, shoulders, you name it. There was all sorts of sculpting and fat blasting going on in that basement. I actually managed to lose over 20 pounds and gained a good amount of muscle. Unfortunately, it all melted away in the next year as I dealt with a slew of major life changes including a divorce…obviously. But it definitely started something, and now I’ve come full circle. From leotard to onsie!!!!
On a side note, I feel great today. I went home and had the usual burning in my quads after my squat workout last night. I thought for sure I’d be sore and hating life all night, but I wasn’t! I slept great and didn’t wake up until 4:30 which is a first for me in a LONG time. I don’t feel sore today either. I think I’m turning a corner…don’t want to speak too soon though ; )
