Ugh. I’m not having fun today. Apparently Erector Spinae translates to serious pain in the neck arse! About a month ago I woke up with the most horrible pain in my neck that I think I’ve ever felt. It took about a week for it to go away, but it eventually did. Unfortunately, it’s been recurring on a smaller scale ever since. Every morning I wake up feeling like my head has been cramped at funny angles all night.
Pretty soon I’m going to wake up looking like her….
It’s not surprising that I’ve developed some muscle imbalances. Apparently it’s my erector spinae muscles that have been left behind. They don’t sound important at all….they just keep me upright….who needs that? I have some physical therapy exercises to help strengthen them, but they hurt. Can you believe that I do my entire workout….100 squats, tons of heavy bench, 50 pull ups, whatever the day brings….and the hardest thing I do is the PT. Just laying on the ground with my head turned to the side trying to lift my arm up off the ground. It sucks. Hopefully it will actually make this neck pain go away at some point. For now, it’s not horrible, not enough that I need to stop lifting to rest it, but it’s annoying!!!!!
The good news is, the neck pain isn’t affecting my lifting, just my sleeping. I benched yesterday. By the way, I am so stinkin happy to be back on normal splits!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think I could have taken another day of volume. My goal yesterday was a 5 rep max. I started out at 85 pounds (which I accidentally told my trainer was 185…wishful thinking?). And worked up to 130 pounds. I was super excited considering that 130 was my 1 rep max just 3 months ago. I think that got me psyched out a bit too. I tried for 135 but my form turned to a lump of globby poo. It was terrible.
For as many mental hang ups as I’ve gotten over, I’ve still retained a few. The plates were even freaking me out again yesterday. I normally do 115 with 2 25’s and 2 10’s, but yesterday I put on 2 35’s. I got a glimpse of the bigger plates out of the corner of my eye while I was under the bar…..eeek, I was immediately nervous. The reps felt good though….thankfully. After benching I did some close grip incline press, cable rows, shoulder presses, dips, and planks. Yep…ab work! I was pretty excited. (not so excited about the rug burn that I got on my elbow though…..seriously, that would only happen to me.) My whole body feels good today. A little bit sore…just enough to let me know that the switch in workouts threw my muscles for a bit of a loop.
Today, I’ll be doing a 5 rep max for box squats. Should be interesting considering I haven’t done any box squats in forever (okay, so in this case forever translates to about 4 weeks)!
And lastly, I wanted to share an article that was referenced on Girl Heroe’s blog. It’s about women and strength training….I thought it was good. I don’t strength train to look different, I do it to feel different. But i think that whatever path leads you here…..take it…and RUN!!!
