Another lovely workout yesterday. Benching can be really fun when it goes well, and it did. I was pretty groggy when I went to the gym….despite more coffee than I’ve ever drank in one day. I was worried that it was going to affect my lifting so I purposely didn’t pay attention to the amount on the bar. I didn’t want to add a mental fluke to my sluggishness. The goal was to bench 5 sets of 5 at some random weight 120 pounds. I didn’t have any trouble with the reps at all. It makes sense because my 8 rep max was 115 pounds, so you’d think I could do 120 a few times, or 25. It also shows progress because I tried to do 3 sets of 5 at 120 pounds in July and couldn’t finish the last set. I also had a lot of motivation to get the reps over with due to the teabag factor….
They look like they’re spiking the tea with whiskey…..
I wish I was referring to tea with granny, but I’m not. Anyone who has ever benched with a spotter is all too familiar with the teabag affect. When a spotter gives you a hand off, or when I’m setting up to bench….there’s is just no way to avoid getting your face uncomfortably close to said spotter’s crotch. At times, it can be dangerously close. Thankfully I’ve never experienced bag to forehead contact, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a run-in one of these days. The sacrifices we make to be strong. If you had asked me 9 months ago if I’d be okay with sliding my face into a complete strangers crotch twice a week, I’d have surely said no. But now, I don’t think anything of it. I just hold my breath and hope for the best.
Anyway, I also got to do some pull ups, shoulder presses, rows and dips after benching. And then I switched gears to try to prepare myself for this morning’s double whammy.
I think I was headed for disaster from the beginning on this one. I was supposed to deadlift 5 sets of 5 at 225. Having not dead lifted in at least 6 weeks, AND having never done 5 reps at 225….WTF? I tried it though. It was heavy as hell, no surprise. Luckily, I got cut lose after 2 sets…only to switch to heavy squats. Like I said…doomed from the start. I was supposed to do 5 sets of 5 at 175, but after deadlifting….I was toast. I was struggling in my warm ups at 155 so I stayed there for my working sets. I got through most of them, but crapped out on the last rep of the last set. I’m pretty sure I just gave up….so tired.
I have to work an event this weekend which means lots of hauling and carrying things around. If there is a god, I won’t be so sore that I can’t walk or bend over. I’m don’t think I’m going to be that lucky though…..
