It’s the first of October and that means Hudson (my next meet) is one month out. Yikes. My training has been going good, but at this point I can honestly say that I don’t feel ready. I think it’s normal to always wish you had a bit more time. I had about 13 weeks to train for my first meet, 12 weeks for my second meet, and only 10 weeks for this meet. So I suppose it makes sense that I’m feeling a bit rushed. But, I’ll only have 11 weeks to train for the Raw Unity meet in January, so I guess I better get used to it.
Yesterday, i did my typical Thursday workout- heavy squats and heavy deadlifts. I did 3 sets of 2 for squats and then 10 sets of 1 for deadlifts. There is just nothing fun about heavy singles. They’re heavy and they take forever. I used my belt to try to ease some of the pain and suffering, but it didn’t help much. Reps 2 through 5 were okay, but 6 to 10 were awful. Ray showed up to heckle me a bit. He tried to get me to use the “grip and rip” method on 8th rep…..nice. Yeah, I had nothing on that bar. My deadlifting technique is very slow and methodical (aka garbage), but it works. I got all 10 reps done and gladly moved on to the next thing….even though it was heavy reverse hyper. I think I’m actually starting to like this machine. I put 50 pounds on it yesterday and had no problem, even after heavy squats and deads. The only unfortunately part was that I was completely deaf the entire time I was doing it. I think I strained so hard when I was dead lifting that I suffered temporary hearing loss. I had a bad head ache too. Ahhhh, the joys of lifting. At least I didn’t break a tooth from clenching my teeth so hard. Now that would be embarrassing.
Then this morning’s lift was even more fun. It started off with me dozing off after my alarm woke me up. I jolted awake a few minutes later and rushed into the bathroom thinking I was late. I had washed my face, gotten dressed and was brushing my teeth by the time I realized that it was only 5:45 am. I didn’t need to be at the gym until 6:45 am….now what? So I went downstairs, ate a banana in the dark and waited until it was time to go to the gym. Good times. Once I got there, I benched 3 sets of 2 at 135 with a pause, then close grip bench, dumb bell rows and dips. The dips weren’t weighted this time so they felt really funny. I had to do 3 sets of 15. The first few reps were a breeze, my arms felt like they were spring loaded. Then I got to rep #12….not so spring loaded. By the time I got to the 3rd set of 15, I was really having to talk myself into doing it. My tris were on FIRE by the last rep.
Yep, it pretty much felt like this…except more in the tricep region.
Have a great weekend everyone! Lots of fall colors and apple pies to be had here in Northern Minnesota. I will personally be on the hunt for the best caramel apple that money can buy!
