My bf has been sick for two weeks now starting more than a week before my last meet. I was not about to get sick before the meet and he was paranoid about how much crap I’d give him if he got me sick and sabotaged my meet. Hence, a strict no contact rule was in place. No kissing, no holding hands, no nothing. You can imagine it got a little old after a while, especially after 10 days. So, as soon as the meet was over, we threw that rule straight out the window. So….now I’m sick. fantastic. I woke up at 2 am last night with a horrible sore throat. And unfortunately, my normally insanely low stress job has been annoyingly demanding lately so I couldn’t even stay home sick. In fact, today ended up being probably one of my top three all time most productive days. And tomorrow is another day filled with critical meetings and such that I can’t miss. Seriously…..I got a government job so that I could stay home when I was sick, wtf?
Luckily, I managed to get my workout in yesterday before I started feeling too bad. It was supposed to be a light and easy leg day. 5×5 squats and deadlifts at about 65% of my max. Unfortunately, there was still an alien invasion taking place in my back so absolutely nothing about the workout felt light or easy.
Yep, that’s pretty much how I feel after deadlifting.
The squats were okay I guess. I just had to remind myself every 10 seconds that the weight was really light despite that fact that it felt like I had Star Jones (pre-surgery of course) on my back. Then it was on to deadlifts. Oh god….did it hurt. Plus I had to be super conscious of not clenching my jaw. After just getting rid of the headache from my meet, there was no way I was going to back track. As a result, I did all the reps with my mouth hanging open….which is just wrong. I’m sure I looked like a complete fool, but what’s new. After the 4th set I had pretty much decided to be done. I was agonizing over the last set….just standing there, staring down at the bar (come on….I know you’ve been there) when I noticed this tall skinny kid standing on the platform next to me staring at the bar in front of him too. Turns out he was dreading his last set (15 reps) of shoulder presses almost as much I was dreading my last set (5 reps) of deads. So I told him we were gonna race. I smoked him, of course…which had nothing at all to do with the fact that he did three times as many reps as me. Finally, I had 3×15 reverse hyper which was actually a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. It still hurt, but there was definitely no alien take overs going on.
In conclusion, I’m sore. My pecs are sore from the benching and my quads are sore from squatting. And I’m sick. Million bucks. Luckily Ray took pitty on me and gave me the rest of the week off. It will give me a chance to rest and to make some decisions about my next meet. Apparently some new complications have arisen with the Raw Unity Meet that I was planning to do in Tampa in January so I may have to put that one on hold…….ugh.
