I’m not sure what is going on with me, but I feel like my brain has finally caught on to the fact that I’m trying to lift heavy weight over here. Maybe it’s the added experience that’s helping me out, or maybe because I’m half crazy with work/life stress and my current state of stuffed up-ed-ness. I remember a friend of mine texting me about the insane success he was having in the gym one week while he was sick. He was so sick that he couldn’t work or even think, but he was hitting PR’s in the gym everyday. Maybe it’s some crazy phenomenon that is reserved for only us nut jobs that are crazy enough to actually go to the gym while we’re sick? I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m hitting crazy PR’s, but I have had a lot of success in the gym the last two days so I’m happy with that.
It was bench day today. 5×5 at 125. I started out with some warm up reps. I had just done a few reps at 95 when this old guy came over and told me how impressed he was with my skills. “Thanks…I’m just warmin’ up (as I puffed up my chest and strutted around the bench a bit)”. Whatever, I take what I can get these days. I don’t care if he was 65 years old and 120 pounds soaking wet…I could smoke! Anyway, back to the task at hand. The first set of 5 was okay, but they got progressively harder…duh. I stuck with it though. I even managed to not panic when the reps started to get really hard. My initial reaction is to bail when I hit my sticking point, but tonight I thought it through. I felt my left wrist cranking back, and I actually managed to correct it. I rolled my hands forward and pushed the weight back over my head (another nifty trick that a fellow lifter taught me). All 5 sets….done. I have no idea why I’ve suddenly obtained the ability to work through my reps, but I like it.
The rest of the workout entailed the usual- dips, over head press, and dumb bell bench. None of which were easy. Some of which were even rather pathetic, but I survived. As I was finishing the workout, I started checking out some of the other people that were working out. I sort of miss the variety of regular workouts sometimes. Then I noticed one group of women that were working on hand stand push-ups. Awesome. They were doing them with bands which looked kind of fun, but I decided I needed to try it unassisted cuz I’m a badass power lifter, right? wrong. I tried, and failed….miserably. After several tries, I managed to kick up into a handstand, but that was about as far as I got. I lowered myself about a half an inch before I realized that the likelihood of dropping myself on my head was about 100%. So that was that. My first and last encounter with hand stand push-ups.
Way to go…Judy six pack…why don’t ya brag about it some more!
This is actually much more comparable to what I was doing tonight…..
I’m heading to Michigan tomorrow…to the dark ages where cell phone reception and internet connections are few and far between (they really do have modern technology there, just not at my mom’s house where I’ll be staying). So I’ll be lifting on Thursday and Friday, but may not be able to post until Monday. Have a great Veteran’s Day weekend!!
