I had a fantastic vacation in Sunny (but chilly!) Orlando last week. I spent a week with family and friends including my mom, aunts, uncles, cousin and friends. We stayed in a gorgeous condo and got to cook great family meals most nights. We spent our days hitting up Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure…and the occasional shopping trip. My first day in Orlando was dedicated to securing the much needed wedding dress. That mission was more than successful. With the help of my mom and my aunt, I found the most perfect dress! It was even better than what I had imagined. Yay!
I was very glad to have a mandatory week off from the gym. Well, at first I protested, but once I got there I realized it was a good thing. My mom had me up at 7:00 am to get to the parks first thing everyday. There was no way I was going to get up at 5:00 am on vacation so that I could get a workout in beforehand. So, I was left with hoofing it around Islands of Adventure chasing my mom all day. That woman….I tell ya. I was ALWAYS ten paces behind her. I could not keep up with her to save my life. She was excited though. There were virtually no lines on any of the rides. We got to go on roller coaster one right after another sometimes multiple times in a row. I spent most of the week in a dazed roller coaster stupor…with the associated wind blown hair do.
However, the most exciting part about the trip was winning the coveted 2011 Miiller Invitational Euchre Tournament. Last year I came in a close second (in a rigged tournament). This year I was determined. Admittedly, I did get pretty lucky. The teams are drawn randomly and I got paired up with my mom. She’s loves winning in cards almost as much as she loves roller coasters. So yeah….we did pretty well. You don’t even need to worry about table talk when you’re playing with some one you’ve known your entire life. It also helps that she has been honing her cut-throat card playing skills in almost weekly family game nights. We made a great team and plowed through our competition! I had to disassemble the trophy to fit it in my suitcase on the way home. TSA was not super excited about the12 inch metal rod in my carry on, but they let it slide.
The worst part about the trip was the threat of illness. One of my uncles was sick when we all showed up. Uh oh. Sure enough, one by one, we all started getting sick. Luckily, mine held off until Friday when I was leaving. It hit just in time for me to get home and spend my entire weekend on the couch. I even had to stay home on Monday and miss what was supposed to be my first workout in a week. Ugh. This has been one of my sickest years to date. I must be doing something wrong. I’m feeling a bit better now and did manage to get to the gym yesterday.
It’s funny how taking just one short week off can change things. It’s just enough time to awaken the soreness demons. They are rearing their ugly heads all over my upper body today. Last night, my trainer decided to take out all of his frustration with his new semester of classes on my triceps. Poor little guys….they were so tired. It was benching 5×10 at 75 pounds (oh so pathetic), barbell rows 5×10, overhead press 5×10, and then skull crushers 5×10. Pretty much everything arm related is aching today. I can’t wait to see how I’ll feel after my leg workout tonight. I’m guessing there will be some toilet soreness tomorrow. Fun times.
