Okay, so I’m a bit behind, but I wanted to share a post that I came across on The Great Fitness Experiment the other day. Which is worse: Being called Fat or a Whore? It’s a good question, right? Both are insanely offensive, but which one is really worse. I agree with Charlotte that there has been quite the shift in overall tolerance over the years. 50 years ago, getting pregnant at 16 was grounds for being kicked out of school and permanent familial banishment. These days, it lands you your own show on MTV and the cover of US Weekly. Huh? But Twinkies in your lunch box……game on! Prepare for a full on torture fest at school. Sexual promiscuity is so much more socially acceptable than the resultant excess baggage of over frequenting the Mickey D’s drive through. How does that happen? Which one is less acceptable to you? And don’t sit there and act like you love everyone equally and would never in a million years judge either of these folks.
Yep, that’s what I thought.
Anyway, I think it’s time for a new subject ; ) I had the pleasure of doing some deadlifts out of the rack yesterday. This is something that Ray “the coach” frequently threatens me with, but I’ve rarely done. I guess some people like them, but I think it’s absolute torture. Doing them in the rack means that you have to start the lift in your weak point…ouch. I did 5×5 at 225 pounds. I tried this same workout months ago and had no success at all. I don’t think I got one rep done. This time around, I did actually get the reps done. I had more rest in between sets than your average newborn gets in a day, but who’s counting. I’m not good with human anatomy, but there are these muscles along the outside of my lower back that were actively attempting to kill themselves throughout the entire workout. It was fairly brutal. The best part was that I was supposed to do 5×5 of heavy squats afterwards. What? Seriously? Yeah. After the deadlifts, I seriously felt like the only thing connecting my head to my legs was my vertebrae. No muscles whatsoever. I was no match for the 185 pounds that I was supposed to do. I ended up doing some reps at 135, but even they were worthless. I did managed to drag myself through 5×10 reverse hyper at the end, but again the amount of rest between sets was horrible.
This morning’s workout was MUCH easier. I did 5 x failure for pull ups, 5×10 dumbbell rows, and 5×10 shoulder presses. Easy peasy. The best part about it was that I was expecting to have to deal with an alarming amount of muscle soreness in my back. Luckily, the pain is not nearly as debilitating as I expected. There will be no bending over for a few days, but at least I’m not naucious…that’s the worst.
