I’ve resurfaced. The world of technology was seriously out to get me last week. I could not catch a break. It was a busy and fun filled week of workouts and self deprivation. It was fantastic.
I started off the week with a less than stellar squat workout. I was trying to reset with an “easy” 5×5 at 170 pounds….ugh. It’s not that it was super hard, but it wasn’t easy either. Tuesday was an equally challenging bench workout with what was supposed to be 5×5 at 120. I only ended up doing 3 sets though. It was tough. Thursday was the mother of all crappy workouts. Rack deadlifts for 5×5 at 235 pounds. Man those hurt. It strains my lower back so much, and it makes loud noises. I got through them though, barely. The funniest part was that I was supposed to do 135 pound front squats afterwards. Um…no. Deadlifts totally wreck my core. I’m worthless for anything squat related afterwards. Finally, I ended the week on a high note. I haven’t been doing a second heavy bench workout each week because I’m trying to get my shoulder to ease back into things. My second upper body workout is usually just back/lats/shoulders/bis/tris. My first task was to knock out 30 pull ups. Not nearly as daunting at my usual 50. As you may recall, I have been really disappointed with my pull up performance lately. Maxing out at 5 or 6 reps when I used to be able to get 10, no problem. The most I’ve ever gotten was 11, but that was almost a year ago now. So I wasn’t sure what to expect for my first set last week, but I was sure hoping it would be more than 6! Turns out, I actually got 12! A huge PR for me. I was super excited. I told the other guys in the gym about it right away. They, of course, had to try to beat me. One guy got up there and did 8…which was good for having not done pull ups in years. The other guy sadly couldn’t even do 1….sucker.
Today, I start all over again. A heavy squat day, treadmill time tomorrow morning followed by a bench workout tomorrow night. My quest for 132 pounds is going well. I’m down a few pounds, only 6 or 8 to go. My diet got a little derailed the last few days, but it’s back to business tomorrow (I hope). I’m telling myself it’s just good, old-fashioned carb cycling. I am, of course, lying to myself, but I’m totally cool with that.
