I had a fun workout yesterday. Okay, so maybe fun is a bit of an overstatement, but it was good. I was deadlifting, and I somehow managed to find this new sense of determination. I kind of felt like I could lift anything that you put in front of me, as cheesy as that sounds. Of course, I realize that’s not remotely true, but still. I was supposed to do 3 sets of 3 at 235 pounds. Considering that I couldn’t do 3 reps at 235 last week, it seems like this work out would have been more difficult. It wasn’t that bad though. I even bumped it up to 245 for the 3rd set. It was tough, but I got it up just fine. I think a big part of it was just knowing that I could do it. Even if it’s a slightly psychotic state of mind, I think it’s a good thing. And don’t worry, I won’t start eating chalk anytime soon.
(Jon K chalking up before a big lift)
Next I did some box squats with lighter weight so I could work on my lightning fast speed skills. I actually did the squats in my regular workout shoes because I was too lazy to change, and I could really tell the difference. It honestly felt like I was standing on pillows. Before I tried olympic shoes, I had no clue what people were talking about when they laughed and pointed at my spongy tennis shoes. Lesson learned. And FYI, I will now be one of those people pointing and laughing at the other newbies that show up to squat in their air force ones.
Then, just a little over 12 hours later, I got up for my Friday morning speed bench workout. I usually feel like I’ve been in a fight by the time I get to the gym Friday mornings and today was no exception. I did 6 sets of 3 at 115 for “speed”, and then 3 sets of 8 close grip bench, then some dumb bell rows and shoulder presses. It was fast and furious because I was rushing to get to work. Not and easy thing to do since I feel more like a sloth than and sprinter these days. And I mean this kind of sloth….
Not this kind….
Although I do love me some Rocky Road Ice Cream!!!!
Aside from lifting, I had the pleasure of enjoying my first Duluth Huskies game last night. It was a work gathering so I got to see a lot folks outside of our normal work setting. It was really fun seeing all their little kiddies interact. The Huskies won the game 4-2, I think. Good times!
